NOTES FOR— An exhibition, SHE RAGE by Laki Mata

SHE RAGE

Hear her, breathe in, breath out— heavy grip in her fingers as she clenches her heart. Since when do you see her surrender, or have you been witnessing her at her worst, the times she would try to conquer the pain, the times she would be so eloquent of being vulnerable. She's not merely feminine, she's livid too. Perhaps, a thought so normal yet indifferent, for every one, to manifest. The female poise and self-control endure no limitations. And her strong subconscious defines her short. When she's raging, watch closely.

Out of her body, embers in her bones, flaring amongst fragile feelings. She sets herself aflame but she never draws power from rage. The machismo society belittled her with restrictive expectations. That she must be humble, composed, or well-mannered etc. But these notions were eradicated when she spoke and stood up. Women seething is a confrontation. She's showing rage as a normal sentiment to evoke, a woman raging is not a cliché, that rage is a part of human nature. She is passionate, she is weary, she is spontaneous, she is emotional, she is fearful, she is fierce, she is melancholic, she is bold, she is unforgiving— she is owning her emotions. Anger is a response from deeper, underlying emotions, a response to our sense of self. Such anger is an uncomfortable place where she feels safe. Exploring the source of our emotions awakens us to a most profound love. We allow anger.

We think women should be tamed, but we don't condemn women the decision to be true to herself, to feel intensely.

NOTES FOR— A Solo Exhibition, Daloy 2022

Oil Painting by Clint Rey Policarpio. Poster Art by Laki Mata

Bawat isa gumagalaw at totoong masasaya, lahat may kasaysayan.

Walang malungkot, walang nag-iisa.

OVERVIEW

When Clint first explored the province of Pangasinan, he was fascinated by the beauty of everyday scenes of rural Filipino life. He’s enamored by the charm and composite picture of the countryside that he would daydream about it for hours. Although he spent his childhood in the province, he was born in Olongapo City and also experienced the inexplicable life in Manila during his teenage years. From the streets of Recto and Doroteo Jose, to the alleyway of Malabon and Valenzuela City, he became exposed to the boon and bane of Metropolitan settlement. Living and visiting different cities in the country enabled him to weave unfiltered stories and a distinct language from his personal memoirs through his canvas. There are fond memories of feelings, of traditions, of daily practices, and of simple interactions that he would be able to conceive later into art. This is the joy of discovery and journey, the peace of new found purpose, and his earnest hope to convey more than just nostalgia. Through the eyes of Clint Rey Policarpio, we are able to perceive and reawaken our inner sense of belonging to nature, and to the commotion of masses in the urban landscape. The shapes and the flow of colors evokes the warmth of life amidst a busy or serene background. As viewers and mere characters of the masterpieces, we embody the instinctual ecstasy and calmness of the moment, and envelop our subconscious self to a new world. This familiar world is imagined not only to represent a visual portrait, but also to remind us of the collective spirit of Filipino experiences that have passed and that continue to live on.

Daloy is the first solo exhibition of Clint Rey Policarpio. The Cultural Center of the Philippines debuts a collection of his works from 2012 to the present that depicts an understanding of a lively Filipino community, with its rich history, nature, customary beliefs, and personality. Filipino art and culture are huge influences in his works, where concepts manifesting the life of its people and its surroundings flourish and continue to evolve. Different scenes can be seen from a whole picture. I worship the Sea, Sky, Mountain and the Trees) tell individual narratives that complete story to a zoning point of view. Each piece portrays a novel of its own. The impact of temporal experiences, of what’s seen and what’s felt, forms an inspiration for his lasting compositions—detailing scenic impressions of places, events, and Filipino practices in a purely panoramic view, while also leaving more to the imagination.

C. Policarpio seeks to feel yet again the wandering ether and the majestic trees of the past in the same way that he celebrates and interprets them. Art relates understanding. With the power of art, he shares a mutual connection with his surrounding and the cultures he absorbed. In a time when commercial expansion and political crisis is inevitable, as people forget their values and beautiful customs, the artist retells the stories of a colorful identity, the optimism, beauty, diligence, unity, and the resilience of the Philippines. His strong sense of nationalism flows eloquently to the soul of the viewer in a meta-art. His most remarkable style is the self-reflective paintings with an overlying montage of different paradigms and moments. As spectators, we are immersed in the artist’ studio— the world where the paintings convey an interpretation of the real world according to his view, within another layer of painting that we’re able to see in the foreground. His signature persona is illustrated in every rightmost corner of his works. His artistic freedom brings the beauty of Filipino art to the new generation, to nurture, and to create more. Painting is his most significant way to create larger than life art that exudes life. He dreams of creating monumental art pieces for the society to see and enjoy.

The sight of a smile filled with stories, the Pacific blue ocean, the lush mangroves, the grandiose festivities, the tight-knit families and the golden ray of a setting sun shall all remind you of a one-of-a-kind life that existed before us and continuously coexists with us.

He is a Filipino. And this is an open memoir for the Filipino people.

NOTES FOR— An Art Exhibit for A Cause

Counting 1, 2, 3, and onward, what are the things you hope to achieve? How are you contemplating vivid dreams to a purposeful and empowered feat?

Retelling different fragments of nightmares turned into a beautiful panorama, and of dreams turned into a lifework is a battle cry, a rage of passion that doesn’t end. In a time and space that open rapidly like a paradox of emptiness, the light within living beings was engulfing like a dying star. Systems are polarizing and self-interests are scattering. People are indulged in the physical embodiment and worldly desire while losing the value of a pure feeling. And there are artists who illuminate human consciousness and magnify a rediscovered truth and freedom to those who are willing to confide.

Upon dreaming, the world gets wild and everything zooms in. Until we wake up, we realize a familiar and a new expression of our triumphs, dilemmas, and longings. And this layer of reality floats like a thick mirage and a concrete road— then nothing. A life that’s so close yet so far away. Mac Pascual interprets the weight of our tragedies and peculiarity as a revelation of individual beauty, not a daydream but an inspiration. The margin to the ordinary and creative thoughts is a struggle, which neglects one’s power and soul to art. New-age artists are trying to change this gray area to a painstakingly-glazed kaleidoscope.

Mac recognizes the pain and addresses this by continuously serving the deprived. She’s ought to carry the same lingering burden by encouraging her self and other independent artists, conveying these struggles into blends of colors, developing a vision for collective progress. Mac debuts an Art Exhibit for a Cause that unfolds a variety of art pieces, from her body of work and related artists, to seek help to the local community and to patrons in funding her study at Écoles d'Arts et de Culture, Paris, France. With less than enough earnings as a teacher and an artist, Mac puts her hard work into the use of serving others and supporting her advocacies. In the same way, she’s taking this opportunity to earnestly support her fellowmen in their creative pursuits, thus pushing forward the service of creating free and inclusive space for the arts in the Philippines.

It is as sharp and shining as a newfangled genius. With international learning, Mac aims to strengthen the foundation of local artists in transforming themselves and the society and to fight domineering institutions that capitalize on them, the treasures of Philippine fine art. This collaboration of sacrifice and support demonstrates a spirited commitment to promoting local artistry with no restrains— echoing the irony of every artist’s fight to its personal war.

No medication can permanently eradicate one’s inner conflict, like washing the face and body. With only colors, brush, a black canvas, and paper and pen as tools, the artists and visionaries are—encapsulating our raison d’être—enriching liberation. All reflections and the soul to art gifted to concurrent moment reveals an eloquent story of our experience and our journey.

Away from the things to see

Our physical body, like the world, is such a fascinating system of working cells and living organisms. This body is a microcosm of enigmatic life and distinct identity.

Everything connects to one and plays different roles— thus embodying you. Like how trees yield their roots into the soil, latching to life underneath while inspiring the sunlight and the air— one thing supplies another.

The feeling of pain is felt when there’s hurt or discomfort. When we’re stressed, our body and our emotions turn into something we don’t expect, nor want. When we’re happy, the euphoria is out of control. Our body reacts instinctively to all the things we feel and the impacts are apparent.

The life existing within us brings a unique story that we can merely understand. And some consciousness is just hard to explain. Breathe and listen to your bodily sensations. Even your body cares for you. Take care of yourself too.

Philippine Biodiversity

Pearl of the Orient Seas in the Changing World

Two-thirds of the world’s biological diversity can be found in our country, the Philippines due to huge endemism and quintessential habitats. But today, it is facing a threat.

As declared by the United Nations for International Day of Biodiversity, “nowadays, we have access to a greater variety of food than your parents or your grandparents once did. But even as the offerings become more diverse, the global diet as a whole - what people actually eat - is becoming more [domesticated and commercialized], and this is a dangerous thing.”

“Locally-varied food production systems are under threat, including related indigenous, traditional, and local knowledge. With this decline, agrobiodiversity is disappearing, and also essential knowledge of traditional medicine and local foods.”

In our country alone, different species of flora and fauna are now on the edge of oblivion because of overconsumption, loss of habitat thru deforestation, poaching, the introduction of invasive alien species, and insufficient conservation efforts. These endangered species include local crops, trees, rare plants and animals, and marine biodiversity that you or the younger generation might not know about. Our once pristine forests are dwindling at a numbing scale since we became hungry for urbanized progress.

This is the same case for all our heritage. We are losing familiarity towards authentic Filipino recipes, fruits and vegetables, herbal rituals, along with endemic birds, reptiles, mountain animals, and marine life that are inspirations in textile, tattoo, ingenuous crafts, and stories. Thus becoming halfhearted in the sudden slaughter of our identity.

Support sustainable communities, conservation groups and engage in awareness activities that celebrate the biodiversity of our beautiful country, the once called “pearl of the orient seas.”

We can also ask our parents, kaka, lola and all our old relatives to honor our roots by sharing the life and customs that is aboriginal in our country—bringing back our richness in terms of nature, food, tradition, and celebrations— also by reproducing medicinal, flowering and multipurpose plants that are found nowhere else but in our land, rediscovering the old and tasteful cuisines in our family’s palayok, and incorporating the true Filipino legacies in our everyday lifestyle.

A retort on Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis

Lullaby

Contagious fears, rampant lies, tedious wandering, monotonous lights, haunting melodies, restless silence, and messed up locality— the film feels so real.

Watching one of Lav Diaz' films is a displeasure. He's the director that brings viewers into a paradox, where disturbing stories are captured solemnly. During the past weeks, I was curious and thrilled to see Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis, which is a crazy eight hours long film. Hesus Rebolusyonaryo, Walang Alaala ang mga Paru-paro, and Norte: Ang Hangganan ng Kasaysayan were some of his pieces that I’ve come to endure, and to me, they're like a poetry that lingers. Lav was known for his square-framed, black and white cinema, with a really eccentric, yet natural tale; thus provides a distinct approach to socio-political issues and to the cinema. His work isn’t an art for the art’s sake, but an art that reflects culture.

The film reminds me of my province. It has portrayed the outlying feeling of living in the countryside, in terrifying woods, where it made me feel like I was actually there too. I remember when I was a child how weary it feels lurking in the greenery with farm animals, hearing the rustles of cicadas, and the whispers of the wind— a beautiful experience, apparently. It also manifests deception in a satire; how we Filipinos lived with lies, and how easily contrived our culture is. It's a painful and nostalgic portrayal of a never-ending commotion. Hele depicted the irony of a conditioned society, by interlacing the stories of fictitious and true-to-life characters. I believe he used and played myths, especially the role of three allegorical creatures i.e. tikbalang, to ridicule the fallacies of a written history. Rizal’s works were inspired by true characters and some true events. And stories were manipulated therein. It lulls you from the natural world, giving us a lot of time to decipher every light, every stanza.  One thing is certainly addressed; for the Filipino people and the youth to realize an untainted dream, then, to break free.

Lav's Hele isn’t just a plain recreation of different tales. It isn't a piece of narration, clearly, but an implication. Isagani represents the youth, whose wit and curiosity is worth fostering regardless of idiocy. We understand Isagani. The technicals are bare with apparent flaws. The contrast is heavy, and the scenes are protracted. It can be more enduring if the edit is concise. Even so, the story is compelling and suggestive, perhaps to disturb sleepy souls. The film has left me stunned, particularly in the last soliloquy of Crisostomo Ibarra and Gregoria de Jesus—both victims of sorrow— who knew that the country's loss is greater than their own.

A retort about Jay (2008)

Jay 2008 Film Still. Dir Francis Xavier Pasion
“Huwag kami ang inyong matyagan
na mga nahuhumpak na
pisngi at tiyan
silang dapat!
na mga nabubundat
nabubural na pusod
sa labis na paglamon sa
mga mamahaling restawran.”

An excerpt from Bienvenido Lumbera.

The current condition of the popular media is flawed, tolerating the sensational through broadcast oblivion— so flashy, controlling the public’s point of view.

Jay felt like a mockumentary that ridicules journalism in our country today. But how is it relevant? How does it reflect the media to me?

It is evident in most local independent films to execute such a weary and solitary cinematic aesthetic—trying to capture the intimacy of everyday life—which is actually appealing. I find the prologue of the film really convincing, for the videography features a rehearsed recording about a family losing their homosexual child, and then exposing other unrelated angles.

Throughout the story, characters were passively playing the dictated scenarios as if replaying the incident, yet it becomes more ironic—by appearing sensible to our reality—as it tries to incorporate the story to a news report and to the reporter himself. Jay has portrayed how the media can literally manipulate the prevailing thought. It is just amusing how the film consciously overlapped to different angles of reality, representing the deception of what is shown to us, the general spectators.

The narrative sinks deep into me for I can merely relate to the issues narrated. It feels depressing despite the beautiful and artless qualities of gay identities. Queer people are still stereotyped and subjected to social discrimination. Obviously, most people are embarrassed about how gay people behave and present themselves to society. Although Baron Geisler gave an appalling performance as the leading actor, I hope they cast someone more familiar with the experiences of the queer folks.

I understand how the dominating environment can easily touch or influence the majority, like stories that are designed for publicity. It can be realized through the film, that not all actions performed in front of the camera and the spotlights are as true as they show us. Some stories we read or we see through media could be both exaggerated and condensed. We may be yearning for a genuine story, but it always appears biased. With this implication, I'd also submit to the fact that we, as major consumers of different information, shall always be aware to at least investigate and judge a featured story. Its impact on our reception and our response will significantly affect our mutual understanding.

“Huwag kami ang inyong matyagan

na umulan man at umaraw

ay walang masilungan

silang dapat!

na may magarang

tahanan

na hindi kasama sa

mga pahayag na yaman.”

It's been natural in the Philippine PRESS to be controlled by the dominating interests of those considered powerful. Journalism is a dangerous profession in the country. Although they are nominal, the ruling class has always been aggressive in “setting the trend or the dialogue”. Contemplating and deciphering the role of the media in our society today is certainly relevant for we are the sole recipient of anything that happens in our community.

Media has always been an instrument used not only to inform but also to persuade. From prints to television, the role of journalism has always been trivialized and trampled for the sake of a political image, putting the fact of the matter at risk. Jay has left a message to double-check everything we take from any news source. As we ceaselessly surrendered our lives in the cities, building more infrastructures and polished streets, all these artificial, flickering lights have blinded the wandering insects who are only trying to find their direction.

The terrors against our ordinary and oppressed fellowmen shall serve as a lesson on how we engage with mass media— to uphold our rights, armored with the Bill of Rights in the 1987 Constitution— for we have a privilege to protect and be protected with the truth and justice.

“Huwag kami…”

A dainty talk with Clariza Gueta and Carlo Baltero

Poised with sophistication, Clariza Gueta is a modish lady, whose principles and words are full of conviction. She’s been greatly motivated by her smooth and casual boyfriend, Carlo Baltero, who are both an artist by profession, and by heart. They take up their Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts at Technological University of the Philippines, Manila, where they majored in advertising arts and graduated last 2014. During the same year, their group provided significant contributions to the College through the release of a fashion and art magazine, once known as Ardent Magazine. They started exploring their craft as an artist in different companies, particularly in an online ministry called Walk the Same— where they work as constant typographers and graphic artists. Empowered by their faith, Clariza and Carlo were passionate trailblazers adapting calligraphy and typography in their art. Typography is quite some leisure—a sweet quality pastime for the two—which soon they enjoyed applying in some of their works.  They aspire in the future to collaborate and to establish an independent art studio, or a coffee shop where they can freely showcase their passion.

Have you imagined yourself becoming some kind of typographer? What point in life has evoked you to commit to this certain career?

I can’t really say that my career post goes with Typography. It just satisfies me, and I apply it in my work since it already catches the trend. I started doing some calligraphy last 2013, but back then it wasn’t popular, and I just search for references, follow some tutorials, without knowing the exact process and materials. School activities also interfered, so eventually, I didn’t continue. When I graduated and explored a new world, that’s the point I’ve realized I didn’t give my best in the course, I haven’t enthused my talent; so I discovered my love for art, I became passionate. I’ve realized I didn’t choose my fate to belong in the art profession, but I was managed to belong to a greater plan— and I’m privileged because I have the gift, art students were truly endowed with a pure gift. Until late 2015, I continued making calligraphy and typography pieces, it’s also when the art of handwriting reclaims fame, and there were already materials available in the local market, unlike before, you have to check online. I have my materials bought in some online stores, and in craft stores in Glorietta, and in the Common Room in Katipunan; it offers many cute pens, and art and craft materials.

Mercy and Compassion: Unslakable Experience

This could be someone else's story.

For almost four days, I was just—contemplating alone—sitting in a chair to witness what is intriguing in a four-cornered component that displays scenes with the highest priest.

Yes, you imagine it right. I was just watching television since the pope arrived, so my parents go by themselves instead. They were just one of the many people in the neighbourhood, in the nearby communities, or even in the farthest places who were excited, desperate, and joyful to welcome Pope Francis—struggling even in a pinch of vision, just to see him. The effect was contagious. But for me, it's not.

People come and go. People were busy along the streets. Many take their odds. News and gossips were all the same. Pope Francis doesn't even look so much like a pope. Everything's simple. So I wonder what was special in the whole occasion.

But on the last day of the papal visit, when the pope is about to return to his homeland, I took my chance. I know this event hardly happens in the country's history, and I want to be a part of it. The airport's quite near to our house, so I decided to join the jostle of people to catch the last sight of the Pope personally.

Tons of people arrived, perhaps they're also grabbing the opportunity. That day became unexpected.

I've camouflaged in a crowd, that's hopeful amongst different sacrifices. I've walked restless meters and carried hesitation all through. I've also searched for the possible fittest spaces to cram into. I even lose my slippers in sticky mud and get my feet toiled stressfully, then regret not wearing my shoes. I've overcome so many hours of boredom with those occupied and strange citizens. I've cursed the sun until my throat went thirsty. As soon as I got there, I felt so tired and annoyed.

As the popemobile arrives near, the crowd went crazy. I can feel the thrill. People still seem energized despite all their perspiring endeavors. Bare hands, towels, gadgets, children were raised everywhere. All were blocking my tiniest panorama. All were busy making their ways to witness the pope's presence.

Then, bang! In the faint of a second, I've seen nothing but a white mist of his sudden departure from where I stand, a mere sign of his farewell. Praise to the Highest goodness, was it really satisfying? I've waited for about hours, for about a second. But, I know there's something that has brought me there. Something unslakable.

It didn't get me inspired. But, I just felt blessed by the Lord.

KABALINTUNAAN

Dito sa kalupaang hustisya ay nakabalot,

kung saan kolonyalismo’y hubad,

kalayaan ay huwad,

ikaw ay pawang kaluluwang ligaw

na nananahan sa mga pagmamay-aring

iyong pinagdududahan,

at nasasabik sa katutubong hangin,

na unti-unting sinasala upang ‘di matugunan,

hanggang sa damdami’y masupil .

Parang isang nakalatag na papel,

kalmado itong senaryo.

Naglalakad ka sa isang banayad at

akala mo'y malinis na lansangan.

Pahapyaw ang pagtatakipsilim at

unti unting humihinog sa pagkapula ang paligid.

At lahat halos ng mga bagay na

kulay puti ay nakaangat—

Ang mga ulap, nangungusap.

A Retort about an Animated Film

Spirited Away

There are frightening spirits, good spirits, that both exist in the same world. Yet there are courageous and whimsical spirits that can sweep your decent life away.

I am not really that fascinated by Japanese films or animations, since they always present an element of weirdness and incongruity, and the widely-acclaimed anime aesthetics seemed rather unsophisticated for me. I was thinking that I just outgrew the anime fandom phase. And just like any other animated film from Japan, I know Spirited Away will give a wildly-thought-out narrative, but I am expecting it to be lackluster in cinematic magic. Its whole world goes on like a moving storybook, apparently, I realized I was wrong. I was actually bearing no certain interest as the film starts to unfold, but little by little, I was spellbound and encaptured by how the intriguing fantasies came together— bringing into life all the wonderful childhood nostalgia I always aspired to ensue. As soon as I let myself in, I appreciated the style more and just enjoyed the story. It is indeed moving!

Being hauled in such a strange theme park as a child would somehow stir a whole curiosity and anxiety. Stepping into the place of Chihiro, I was pierced by her modest instincts whenever she felt uncomfortable and doubtful. I will never forget the scenes when she just allows herself to feel her overwhelming feelings, to express stillness in spirited moments, and to recover. The character's sense of awareness, authenticity, and morale, among different things, complemented her journey of unforeseen troubles and made her character intimate. The use of complex details freely outspread in a mix of natural and dreamlike occasions amazed me the most. For about two hours, I was teary, happy, and inspired with all the extraneously detailed sequence of events— magnifying the serenity and intricacy of every scene and transition. I needed some snacks, a cup of tea, and a long time to ponder upon ending it afterward.

Studio Ghibli flawlessly showcased the personality of the characters. Without compromising the story's timeline, I grew familiar with each character and relished their candid rolesChihiro and her friends have left a message about courage and resilience, to continuously possess a respectful and good-natured outlook towards every entity despite facing the adversities of life. And the animation pays a nod to a culture of harmony, to an environment filled with sacred energy. At a young age, the film taught me that life sprouts in a rough, animated, and unlooked-for world that we should learn to appreciate.

A Retort about LIWANAG 2016 Exhibit of Aze Ong

Each masterpiece requires great skill and passion; the crochets were masterfully sewn into art pieces, and through the workmanship itself, it's indeed enlightening.

As I go to experience the visual pieces of her handwork, crafted with delicate and profound passion, I feel so subdued, with its energy resonating between me as spectator, and her art. It was actually sarcastic that the artist herself doesn't recognize her pieces as a work of art, after realising the essence of a certain culture practised upon the influence of an indigenous tribe "Talaandig".

     Hiwaga 2015 caught me personally,
because among all the art pieces, it was the odd and one of a kind artwork she made that's truly enchanting, which is what I always demand and seek for every art.

It is really inspiring she has used art to find herself amid the painful struggles she endured throughout her journey towards personal retreatment and enlightenment. So far it has been one of the few masterpieces I've encountered firsthand that's artistically powerful, made in a different and unusual material.

HANGGANAN: A retort about the exhibition

A Pace into the Margin of Threshold

Pinoy na pinoy eh, noh…”

Absolutely true. That line struck me and made me smirk as well when one of my classmates unwrapped his feedback—referring to the candid works of Iggy Rodriguez. Indefinite faces and proportions of Filipinos (i.e. illustrated with a flat nose, undersized stature, and exhausted features) and gloomy background were portrayed. Either an activist or a catalyst; a political advocate or just a concerned citizen of his motherland was Iggy Rodriguez.

His pen and ink drawings, paintings, and assemblages might not be the best works in the metropolitan; nevertheless it must be a striking and eloquent emblem of what was yielded by the generation. The artist doesn’t focus on the realistic perfection of his subjects but merely on the details of realistic perception against the brown society. Through his complicated perspectives, hangganan was exhibited.

I am not really amazed by the socio-cultural discourse of Iggy Rodriguez. Why? His masterpieces surround a prevalent and prominent theme which is primarily about the urban poors, diversity between the upper class and the lower class people, political hypocrisy and the other depressing issues you may somewhat include. I am an optimistic person and therefore, I am not truly mesmerized with what a particular painting would depict if it is more subjective to the revelation of human flaws. I believe that an individual can be more allured into change if he can relate himself effectively to the ideology of a certain artwork through ease, beauty, and clarity.

I was quite enchanted in the Isinumpang Sumpa of Iggy Rodriguez. Although the figures lack precision, the meaning shaped my attention. I guess it signifies the nationalism and heroism whereby we can see our national heroes (deep-rooted Filipinos) who sacrificed not just their lives, but also their happiness (the carousel). As you become a hero, being an ordinary person with simple happiness is not a concept. Such nationalism can also be truly seen in the painting, where obviously our tradition is to put our right hand in our chest to pay respect.

No worries was also one of the paintings that amuse me. It indicates how the Filipino people dwell in the blessings of resiliency. Despite the barren life they may have, they somewhat seem positive and steadfast. It can be seen in the painting that the primary subject encountered catastrophe and vast devastation; however, because of such resiliency and positivism, he doesn’t show his grief and wear a smiley shirt in his face instead. This is what every Filipino can be proud of.

The painting of a mother who carefully holds his son provokes my attention. This painting signifies our motherland who tightly embraces and protects us the Filipino citizens amidst the raging discords of deceptions, fatality and poverty. I was truly touched by the painting because it showcases the love and the concern of a parent towards her child. The meaning is really essential to our society because it manifest how we, the Filipinos, must bestow a profound esteem in our nation regardless of the tragic hindrances that may surround us in development.
